Top Tips for Choosing Adjustable Mattresses over Innersprings

The best gift you can give yourself is a well-rested night’s sleep. Fortunately, the right pillow and mattress combination can make that happen for you. If you have recently purchased a mattress that should have given you a good night’s sleep but found that it is overly firm, we have tips you can try before calling it quits.

Mattresses can feel stiff because they are new, but they will eventually soften over time. Most mattress manufacturers recommend waiting at least 60 days until the mattress fully breaks in. However, sometimes it can also mean that you simply bought the wrong bed for you. The only way to find out which category you belong to is to see if your new mattress will indeed feel softer after some time.

Here are the things you can do to find out:

#1: Check your foundation

Before you do anything, make sure you check your bed’s foundation. Not all mattresses are suited for just any platform. For example, a memory foam mattress is best for a flat and solid foundation, while innerspring mattresses will require box springs. Many times, an incompatibility between your foundation and chosen mattress can lead to discomfort.

Make sure to check the recommended bed platform for a product before making a purchase. You can also ask the sales representatives for their recommended mattress for your existing bed foundation.

#2: Step on the bed

One fun way to soften your new mattress is by stepping on it. The act of sleeping on it night after night can break it in overtime, but if you want to speed up the process, you can walk across its top every day. Do it for several minutes and make sure that the steps are even throughout. Also, remember to clean your feet before you begin.

#3: Warm it up

If you bought a memory foam mattress, consider this tip. Memory foams respond best to temperatures. Keep this in mind before purchasing this type of mattress. If it is placed inside a cold room, it will start to harden. If placed in a warm room, it can become softer.

You can make the bed more comfortable by adjusting your room’s temperature, depending on your liking.

#4: Flip the mattress

One reason you have a firmer mattress than what you initially thought is that you are sleeping on the wrong side. Some mattresses are designed to have a softer and firmer side. Consider flipping it to find out if you are sleeping on the opposite side.

If you have a flippable mattress, here are the many ways you can flip it:

  • Flip it over until the present top side faces downwards.
  • Rotate the mattress by 180 degrees or until your current head support becomes your feet support.

Regularly turning your mattress over can help you keep it in good shape by evening out its wear.

#5: Use a mattress topper

If you want the fastest and cheapest way to soften your bed, try adding a topper. It acts as a supportive layer that can improve your bed’s contouring and enhance its pressure point relief. You can choose from latex, memory foam, wool, cotton, or polyfoam. Go with the type of mattress topper that can give you your desired softness.

Conclusion

Beds that are too hard or too soft can cause people back pain. If you have a mattress that is too firm for you, it can trigger pressure points in your hips, shoulders, and torso. Eventually, it can lead to misalignment. If it is not comfortable, do not wait ’til your body suffers. Try if these tips will work for you. If not, check if you can ask for a replacement or just buy a softer one.

How to Adjust a Mattress' Firmness or Softness - Our Guide

About Us

Everything started for me when I started having back pain in the mornings when I woke up. I tried seeing a chiropractor and tried to exercise harder so I would stay asleep through the night. Nothing seemed to be working, I was just so stiff every morning that I didn’t know what could be causing it. Then I learned it was my mattress.
