When it comes to choosing the type of mattress you want, there can be different factors that might affect your decision. Depending on your priorities and needs, you might want to adjust your choices and expectations. You can also read mattress reviews to help you with your decision.

If you’re a little confused about how you can choose the right mattress for you, here’s a quick guide for you:

Prioritize support and comfort

Now, most people tend to automatically go for the softest mattress available because they find them more comfortable. Other people, on the other hand, believe that going for the firmest mattress means going for the one that provides more support.

Neither is wrong, but they’re situational. First and foremost, support is more dependent on your spine’s alignment, which varies from person to person.

For example, a side sleeper who sleeps with his hip and shoulder sunken into the bed will need to have an elevated core, allowing the spine to feel more relaxed and be perfectly aligned. However, going for the softest bed that you can find doesn’t always equate to being the most comfortable. Lying down on a super soft bed will force your body to work a little harder than with the support of a firmer mattress. On the flip side, a mattress will not provide better support just because it’s the firmest available.

Depending on your sleep style, the type of mattress that will give you the best support will vary:

Side sleeper

If you’re a side sleeper, you’re going to need a mattress that mainly supports your side. You’ll want to go for the mattress that’s soft enough to let your shoulder and hip sink in, helping your spine be leveled with the bed. Most side sleepers go for softer mattresses as they help make sleeping for them easier.

Back sleeper

As a back sleeper, you’ll want your back to rest in a natural position as you sleep. Unlike side sleepers, you don’t need to sink in a bit, but rather, you’ll need a mattress that’s a little firm to support your weight and keep your spine level. That will not put much strain on your body as you sleep and feel it in the morning as you wake up. Back sleepers tend to go for medium-firm mattresses.

Stomach sleeper

Stomach sleepers are similar to back sleepers in some ways. The main difference, however, lies in their need for neck support as they tend to sleep with their heads tilted slightly and faced to the side. If you’re a stomach sleeper, you’ll want a softer mattress than what back sleepers would usually get, but not too soft that will make it harder to get up. Go for a medium-soft mattress.

Combo sleeper

Combo sleepers can find it tricky to search for the perfect mattress for them. If you sleep comfortably in multiple positions, you’ll want a balance between soft and firm to allow you to sleep in these different ways. That said, you may want to work around and try different mattresses to find the one the works best for you.

Conclusion

Finding the right mattress means prioritizing comfort. However, it’s important to keep in mind that too much comfort can put extra strain on your body in the long run, so you’ll want to have a mattress that can still support your weight. If you’re still unsure, go for a medium-firm or medium-soft mattress as a starting point.

About Us

Everything started for me when I started having back pain in the mornings when I woke up. I tried seeing a chiropractor and tried to exercise harder so I would stay asleep through the night. Nothing seemed to be working, I was just so stiff every morning that I didn’t know what could be causing it. Then I learned it was my mattress.
