The Secret to Better Sleep [Infographic]

Posted on Thursday Nov 8, 2012

It’s no secret that getting enough sleep is crucial to our everyday lives, including our productivity the next day and our health overall. According to The Secret to Better Sleep from Greatist.com “When we get less sleep than we need, our reaction times get slower, our blood pressure rises, we eat more, and we’re more at risk of obesity and diabetes.”

Getting enough sleep can “reduce stress, improve memory, help you lose weight, prevent depression, and heal faster. Sleep can also reduce inflammation that could lead to heart conditions, cancer, and diabetes. Adequate sleep makes you more alert and gives you faster reaction times.” While the number of hours recommended may vary from person to person, be sure you schedule yourself enough time to get enough sleep to fit your needs, and follow through getting those hours!

While there are many different reasons people may not get enough sleep, including disorders that cause interruptions in ones sleep patterns such as insomnia, apnea, night sweats, narcolepsy,  or even your partner having one of these conditions could cause you to lose up to an hour of sleep a night as well.

Sugar, alcohol, chocolate and spicy foods could even play a role in disrupting your sleep; so it’s important to avoid foods such as these close to bed time. Instead you should opt for foods such as yogurt and popcorn that won’t upset your stomach and cause any lack of sleep.

Read a good book, write out the thoughts stirring in your head in your journal, have an herbal caffeine-free tea, or take a bath; these are all things that can help you to have a better nights rest! Don’t be afraid to take a nap in the day either. Naps have been proven to give you energy and raise your productivity by up to 30%. Tell your boss you need a 30 minute break to squeeze in a nap for company benefits, hey the Spanish do it!
